Sorry for the months-long delay! If you see this, thank you for not hitting unsubscribe..
I just wanted to catch you up briefly on what's been going on in my life. Not the day-to-day survival thing, just the cool stuff.
Kara's memoir is still in production. I've had to put editing on hold, though. Because the documentary has become my main focus. It takes a lot of work to make a movie, who knew?! Seriously, though, I realized I must wear at least thirteen hats on this project. And I love them all.
I'm developing the rhetorical modes for communicating the film in different spaces. Working with a graphic designer on finalizing the film's visual identity. Building a promotional campaign around Sparkle On's connection to the weird art of air guitar. Co-organizing a fundraiser. Collaborating on the expanded cut of Kara's celebration of life for theatrical presentation as well as the film's first official trailer. Planning the next phase of the film's social media content.
And last weekend I attended the US Air Guitar National Championships in San Francisco where I handed out this year's winner of the Picante Sparkling Unicorn Warrior Award! I'll post a picture and video when I get it. Incredibly. Fucking. Powerful.
I'll wrap with two items.
One: SAVE THE DATE. On Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Echo Theater near the Bagdad Theater on Hawthorne Blvd., the film team is hosting a screening of The Sparkle Celebration: Kara's Memorial Rock Concert! Depending on interest, this may be the only time this feature-length presentation of Kara's celebration of life will screen in a theater that is not in someone's home. If you missed Kara's celebration of life, or want to see what it looks like shot and edited for the big screen, THIS IS YOUR CHANCE! There will also be performances, a pop-up tattoo artist, raffle prizes, and the debut of the first official Sparkle On documentary trailer! It's going to be hella fun!
Tickets open up next week. I'll post the link here along with the event flyer.
On a more serious note, I timed the event to mark the third anniversary of Kara's Sparkling On into other realms. I lost my wife after a four-year struggle with cancer on Thursday, Sept. 14, 2023.
Okay, two: Sparkle On film director Adam Sweeney released the first teaser for the movie the day before the 2026 US Air Guitar National Championships! Including footage shot at last year's national finals, this 48-second clip gives a facemelting glimpse into the film's emotional core.
Thanks again for not unsubscribing. I'll be back here soon, pinky swear!
Until next time.
